I am using recordings that have been collected by SailBritain on expeditions in 2022, where they sailed to different locations along the West coast of the UK. Each site where a recording was collected corresponds to habitats with varying complexity, so I will be trying to quantify the soundscape of these habitats using different methods of acoustic analysis. The first part of my analysis includes calculating various acoustic indices for different frequency bands at each site. The second part of my analysis involves calculating phonic richness, which I am doing manually by creating a sound library of common biotic sounds. These calculations should allow me to analyse the sound community at different sites and determine if and how habitats differ in their soundscape. Using acoustic analysis could be an efficient and cost-effective way of monitoring marine ecosystems. I hope to refine some of the methods to then collect more data on these habitats and understand their soundscape over greater time scales.
