AI image analysis workshop: Unlocking deep-sea biodiversity data from Greenland’s submarine wall ecosystems

Organisers: Drs Laurence De Clippele (University of Glasgow, United Kingdom), Sandra Maier (Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, Greenland), Veerle Huvenne (National Oceanographic Center, United Kingdom), Michelle Taylor (University of Essex, United Kingdom)

Venue and dates: Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, Greenland (GINR). 3-7 February 2025

Workshop aims: The workshop will contribute to the development of a network of AI-trained researchers, foster new long-term and equitable Greenland- and UK-based partnerships, and provide biodiversity data that can be used to conserve and restore ecosystems in light of climate change and anthropogenic activities. While the focus will be on image data collected from deep-sea benthic habitats, this workshop will be relevant to all working on large image data sets captured with time-lapse image cameras, videos, drones, microscopes etc.

The workshop will be useful to you if you are interested in:

(1) learning about the potential of AI for automating image analysis and/or how to develop AI models yourself;

(2) learning about how multibeam, AI, passive acoustic and genetic tools are used to study deep-sea habitats.

GINR: This workshop is open to all GINR staff (technicians, researchers and senior staff). GINR staff are welcome to attend the whole workshop (5 days) or only the AI introduction and RootPainter (i.e. AI tool) practical (1 day, Monday 1330-1600) or the seminar which will provide an overview of the Drs De Clippele, Huvenne and Taylors expertise (1 hour, Tuesday 1300-1400). See the schedule below for more information. If you are interested in developing a model for your own data set, please contact laurence.declippele@glasgow.ac.uk .

Early Career Researchers: A total of five ECRs will participate in the workshop to gain skills in developing AI models, expand their network and understanding of deep sea habitats in Greenland. They will develop models on image data collected in Greenland and present results at the end of the workshop.
