Our coastal habitats are full of sound! To understand what sounds we find in UK’s coastal habitats, such as seagrass meadows, kelp forests, rocky reefs and sandy beaches we teamed up with SailBritain to explore our underwater soundscapes and featured on BBC Landward (2022 episode 16)!

Honours student Carla Leone used the sound recordings collected in collaboration with SailBritain to relate habitat complexity to different soundscape metrics. She detected unqiue phonic communities composed of an interesting variety of sounds, including many fish grunts! She also wrote a blog about the importance of sound in our oceans and her project here on the SeaVoice website.

We also use sound to monitor the biodiversity associated with seagrass meadows, on which PhD student Issy Key wrote a great blog here. We are currently also measuring the rewilding effect of the seagrass restoration SeaWilding is doing in Loch Craignish (Scotland), which at the same time helps us unravel how the soundscape is changing as a consequence of daily and seasonal changes.
